How to Create a Facebook Fan Page

This tutorial will show how to setup a Facebook Page (not a personal profile). I will also show how to add a custom Tab/page within as well as add your company logo. Seemingly this would all very easy but I found some of this to be a bit tricky.

Setup an Account

1. Go to this Facebook URL, instead of filling out the form, click on “Create a Page”. If you are logged into Facebook, logout.

2. On the next signup page, select “Brand, product, or public figure” and enter a page name.

3. If you have a Facebook account, login. If not, you will need to create a regular Facebook profile which will act as the administrator of the Page account.

4. Signup is now completed. You may fill out any appropriate content. NOTE: The “Get Started” tab is only visible to a logged in Administrator, not the general public.

Add Company Logo

1. Login to Facebook, click on “Edit Page”

2. Click on “Profile Picture”

3. Upload logo image from your desktop, should have roughly square dimensions

Create a Custom Tab

1. Login to Facebook, click on “Edit Page”

2. Click on “Apps”

3. Find the “Static FBML” App, select “Add App”. Refresh the page: the page doesn’t refresh to show that the App is installed.

4. Within FBML App item, click on “Edit Settings” be sure it is “Added”.

5. Enter Tab title and content.

a. Use HTML and inline CSS
b. Maximum width is approximately 510 pixels
c. Only use code that would normally go within the body tags of a web page
d. Images needs to be hosted on another server

6. After page is added, you may wonder where the tab is. Click the double right arrows left of the “+” sign to find it. You can then click (hold it down) and drag it to the desired tab location. NOTE: you cannot make it appear left of the “Info” tab, not sure why this is.

7. If you later want to update your custom page, follow steps 1-2 above. Then click “Go to App”, to edit page. You can also add another page. Be aware that it will inherit content from your existing page so you will need to update it.

Make a Custom Page Your Default Page

You can also make the custom page you’ve created the default page.

1. Login to Facebook, click on “Wall”

2. Then click on “Settings”

3. Under View Settings, select the page for the “Default Landing Tab for Everyone Else” setting

4. Select page you’d like to appear on your ‘homepage’

Notes

Thanks Mark: very helpful. Is there going to be a part two? I’d love to learn how to make the default landing tab content visible to visitors only after they Like your page. I plan on having some special content on the tab that incentivizes them to Like you.

It would definitely be valuable to show how to display content based on “Like” status, I’ll do a writeup on that next time.
